『東海道五十三次』（とうかいどうごじゅうさんつぎ）は、歌川広重による浮世絵木版画の連作である広重の作品のうち最もよく知られたものであり、
もっともよく売れた浮世絵木版画でもある葛飾北斎の『富嶽三十六景』シリーズとともに、名勝を写して、浮世絵に名所絵（風景画）のジャンルを確立した
これらの名所絵には西洋の構成表現が取り入れられ、日本風に消化されて、新しい可能性を生み出している広重の東海道五十三次のシリーズは、
日本だけでなく、のちの西洋美術にも影響を与えた
東海道は、将軍在所の江戸と、天皇在所の京都を結ぶ道で、かつての日本の大動脈であり、江戸時代の主要道路であった五街道の中でも、最も重要な街道であった
古来、道中には風光明媚な場所や有名な名所旧跡が多く、浮世絵や和歌・俳句の題材にもしばしば取り上げられた

Tracing the fifty-three stages along the Tokaido road which ran from the Nihonbashi Bridge,s in Edo to the Sanjyo Ohashi Bridge in Kyoto the fifty-five prints of Hiroshige,s Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido made his reputation as an artist.
This ｂreakthrough series not only met with great success, but also established landscapes as an important subject matter in ukiyoe prints.
